Coalition

On May 16, 2000, representatives of the CIUW, IBEW, Steelworkers, and UWUA, met in Hartford, CT, to discuss how the merger of Berkshire Gas, Central Maine Power, CTG, Southern Connecticut Gas, and NYSEG with Energy East would affect their respective bargaining units. A consensus was reached and The Coalition of Energy East Unions was formed with the following statement of purpose:

In light of the recent and far reaching mergers and acquisitions within the utility industry and the consolidation of market share in our region by ever larger employers, it has become self evident that unions must stand united.

To this end the undersigned agree to maintain open lines of communication,

show solidarity, mutual support, and respect regardless of affiliation and

collectively work in the best interest of our respective memberships.

Furthermore, we agree to make no concessions and strive for improved wages, hours, working conditions, and job security.
